The Shyam Rai Temple is a masterpiece both in design and construction, built entirely of baked mud bricks with terracotta tiles. Its entire building is covered with a curved roof which is a unique style of Bengali architecture. Like most of the temples in Bishnupur, this temple is dedicated to Lord Shri Krishna and Shri Radha. One of the attractions of this temple is a huge Raasachakra which displays various forms of "Radha-Krishna Leela among the Gopis". Shyam Rai Temple is amazing both in terms of its design and construction.

It was built in the Pancharatna architectural style and is probably the oldest temple in the state to reflect this design. Some glimpses of Gandhara style (Buddhist art) can also be seen on the walls, with arched gateways leading to the sanctum sanctorum around the temple. The temple has sculptures and floral motifs, which was the first of its kind in the state. The inner and outer walls along with the ceiling are decorated with terracotta sculptures depicting Krishna Leela and episodes from the great Indian epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata. The intricate carvings on baked terracotta bricks in this temple display incredible skill and talent.
