Description: There are two hills near Bhubaneswar City in Odisha. These both are hills called Udaya giri and Khanda giri, Udayagiri means the Hill of Sunrise is on the right. The other hill's name is Khandagiri means Broken Hills is on the other side of Udayagiri. Inscriptional evidence says that they were built by King Kharavela of the Chedi dynasty during the 1st century BC. These ancient caves were first discovered by a British officer Andrew Stirling in the 19th century. Udayagiri Cave is considered more beautiful and better than Khandagiri. It is said that Udayagiri cave used to be the residence of the Guru of Jain monks. There are a total of 18 caves in Udayagiri Caves, out of which Rani cave and Bajghar cave are considered to be the most beautiful and sacred. Apart from this, Chhota Hathi Cave, Alkapuri Cave, and Panasa Cave Ganesh Caves are very famous. Khandagiri cave is said that disciples of Jainism lived here. There are a total of 15 caves in Khandagiri Hill, among which Tatova Cave, Ananta Cave, Dhyana Cave, Ambika Cave and Nava Muni Cave etc. are prominent. Statues of 24 Jain Tirthankaras are also present in this cave.
