Description: Bhubaneswar is the Largest City in Odisha. It was made the Capital on 19 August 1949, replacing Cuttack. The city was designed by German architect Otto Königsberger in 1946. It has countless sculptural and architectural marvels and temples spread across the city. The caves in the twin hills of Khandagiri and Udayagiri bear testimony to the rich Jain cultural and architectural past through their carvings, sculptural art etc. The cultural heritage is prominently manifested in the architectural sites of the city. Dhauligiri Shanti Stupa or Peace Pagoda marks the foundation by Emperor Ashoka at the end of the Kalinga War.

The inscriptions and an elephant cut out of rock are visible which is considered to be the oldest sculpture in Odisha. The overall structure of the stupa is dome-shaped. These hills house one of the most complete inscriptions dated between c. 273–232 BCE on rock. The Lingaraja temple is the largest in the city. The central tower of the temple is 180 ft. tall. Which represents the quintessence of the Kalinga architecture and culminating the medieval stages of the architectural tradition. The temple is believed to have been built by the kings from the Somavamsi dynasty, with later additions from the Ganga rulers. With a diversity of heritage, the city exhibits important cultural landscape components.
