Description: The most holy place of Jainism known as Shri Sammed Shikharji Tirtha is an important venerable and revered religious place of Jainism. Located in Parasnath Hills of Giridih district Jharkhand. The distance of this Jain pilgrimage from Gaya is 140 km. From this pilgrimage area, twenty out of the twenty-four Tirthankaras along with millions of their disciples left their physical bodies and attained salvation from time to time, hence it is known as Shikharji. The name of this area is also Sammed Shikharji, which means peak of concentration. The reason for such a name is that Tirthankaras attained salvation and only knowledge through penance here. This place is at an altitude of 1,370 meters above sea level and the circumference of its shrine is 43 km. The earliest reference to this pilgrimage is found in the book "Jantar Dharmakatha", which is considered to be the oldest and original text of Jainism. Shikharji temple was built by Vastupal and Vishaldev. This area is full of ancient sculptures, statues and inscriptions dating back to the 10th century to the mid-14th century. The present structure of the temple was built by Jagat Seth in the year 1768 AD. The Sanskrit texts and inscriptions mentioned below each image were written in 1678. There are also murals on the walls of the Shikharji Jain temple on the hills. These images show the existence of other Jain temples on Parasnath hill.
