A versatile genius, he successfully wrote poems in Apabhramsa, Sanskrit and Maithili languages, but his immortal fame rests on his Padavali, whose range of poetry is amazing. It is a mixture of all types of poetry - love, devotion, attractive postures, gestures, movements and vibrations of the human heart. In other words, he moulded every poetic element into a harmony of artistic perfection, his creation had a great influence on the writers of the times to come. The language of his time, Abhatha, derived from Prakrit, was beginning to transform into the early versions of eastern languages like Maithili. Thus, Vidyapati's influence on the formation of these languages has been described as "similar to the influence of Dante in Italy and Chaucer in England".
