This new 40 Paise stamp depicting the Calcutta G.P.O. building is the seventeenth one, sixteenth being the 4 Paise stamp brought on the 15th May, 1968. Only two more stamps in the denominations of Rs. 15 and Rs. 25 remain to be issued to complete the series.

The Calcutta G.P.O. building was completed and occupied on 2nd October, 1868. This lofty two-storeyed building with its impressive dome rising to a height of over 220 feet is an important landmark in the city of Calcutta. It is a living testimony to the long tradition of service of the Indian Posts and Telegraphs Department. It has been the nerve-centre for the postal needs of millions of citizens of Calcutta over successive generations.
