On the 15th August 1949, at the time of the second anniversary of Independence the Posts and Telegraphs Department brought out its first definitive series of postage stamps depicting subjects of Archaeological and Historical interest. The series consisted of 16 stamps of different denominations. Later on, one more stamp in the denomination of 24 annas was included in the series on the 30th April, 1951.
